Empa, the Swiss Federal Laboratories for Materials Testing and Research is an independent governmental research organization in the ETH domain which employs about 850 researchers and technicians. Empa’s work focuses on applied materials research and development, as well as technology transfer to the industry and particularly to SMEs. The Laboratory for Protection and Physiology (LPP) is a group of 25 researchers working in the fields of mechanical energy absorption, heat and mass transfer and medical textiles. It develops new materials and systems for better protection and increased performance of the human body. The LPP covers about 60% of its budget with industrial contracts, as well as nationally and internationally funded projects (e.g. EU or COST projects). The materials development activities of the LPP concentrate on new composites for mechanical protection (impact protection), adaptive and smart materials for improved human thermoregulation, personal cooling systems as well as new sensors for body monitoring (e-textiles).
