deliverable 2.5. : Proof of concept of the smart system
Authors: Mark Richards, Thorsten Szsepanski and Sarah Davey
Rationale
The Prospie smart system monitors the status of a worker in the heat and raises a warning or alarm when necessary. This report details aspects of the smart system operation and is adjacent to the prototype.
Method
Core temperature determination is central to the warning system. Algorithms suitable to estimate the core temperature from the Prospie sensor system are implemented and tested against independent data. These algorithms also require the activity of the worker to be determined.
Results
A literature survey identifies various ways of using an accelerometer to determine energy expenditure. For the Prospie activity, a novel procedure is devised to use accelerometer data to distinguish between physical activity and rest of the wearer. This procedure is validated using a series of subject tests with various repetitive active and rest periods.
Applicability
The smart system is key to the correct operation of Prospie. The smart system algorithms may also be useful for other applications, where for instance core temperature or activity is required.
Conclusions
The functional principle of the smart system is demonstrated for validation conditions and various physical activities.
